I began this artwork as part of my Global Paint Party series, starting with Tonga—the island nation where I was born. Though Tonga is a small island country in the Pacific, it carries generations of my ancestors, stories, strength, and love. This piece is a tribute to Tongan women and to the pride I feel in being Tongan.
I wanted to paint a woman who is completely herself—proud in her skin, proud of her body, proud of her hair, proud of her nose, proud of her ancestry, and proud of where she comes from. The flowers, colors, and landscape are inspired by the beauty of the Pacific and the resilience of our people. She stands in her own power, rooted in her culture and connected to the land and ocean that raised her. As a Tongan artist living abroad, this artwork is a reminder that home lives within us. No matter where I go in the world, Tonga is always with me. This piece celebrates identity, belonging, ancestry, and the beauty of Indigenous Pacific Islander women.
