I created this piece as the first painting in my Global Paint Party series, beginning with Tonga—the island nation where I was born. Though Tonga is a small country in the Pacific Ocean, it carries generations of my ancestors, stories, strength, and love.
This painting is a tribute to Tongan women and to the pride I feel in being Tongan. I wanted to paint a woman who is fully herself—proud of her body, her hair, her skin, her ancestry, and where she comes from.
